For information on residential boilers, consult the U.S. ENERGY STAR® for information on equipment, sizing and installation, product quality, home and duct sealing, and recommendations on finding a good contractor. The Office of Energy Efficiency also offers information and a list of ENERGY STAR qualified residential models.

Further information on residential boilers is available from “Top-Rated Energy-Efficient Appliances: Gas and Oil Boilers (Hot Water and Steam)”, published by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE). It lists top-rated oil and gas boilers for steam and hot water production.

Natural Resources Canada has developed an online Boiler Efficiency Calculator to help managers quickly analyze the efficiency of boiler operations associated with heating and steam plants fired by natural gas and fuel oil.

Cogeneration, available at the Canadian Advanced Buildings Technologies and Practices Web site, has information on that technology.

20 Ways to Save Energy Now at the U.S. Department of Energy's Web site is easy to understand, even though it is written for plant managers and engineers. It has excellent energy saving tips for boilers, an energy-tips fact sheet, and links to case studies and some technical information.

Technical and management services to help private sector and government department clients in the purchase and operation of energy-efficient boilers in Canada is provided by the Canadian Federal Industrial Boiler Program (Energy Technology Applications Group).

Comprehensive information case studies, software tools and many useful tips on steam distribution system maintenance are included in the “Steam” section of the Best Practices Web site of the U.S. Department of Energy's Industrial Technologies Program. Included on this site is an excellent booklet, Improving Steam System Performance: A Sourcebook for Industry.This booklet covers all aspects of boilers and steam, and has 21 steam tip sheets for improving energy efficiency.

Boiler purchasing advice, including a simple payback calculator, can be found in How to Buy an Energy-Efficient Commercial Boiler. This is part of the U.S. Department of Energy's Federal Energy Management Program, which promotes energy-efficiency procurement for American federal government buildings.

The Energy Solutions Center is an organization of utilities, municipal energy authorities, equipment manufacturers and vendors. Its Web site provides information on a number of industrial products, and for boilers there is information on manuals and guides, case studies, videos, training and a vendor directory.

An Energy Efficiency and Environmental Primer for Boilers and Heaters was prepared by the CANMET Energy Technology Centre of Natural Resources Canada, under sponsorship of the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, the Union Gas Company and the Enbridge Gas Company. The primer contains information on air/fuel control, understanding atmospheric emissions, measuring boiler efficiency, case studies and other resources.
