Purchasing Tips

There are many factors to consider when buying an HID ballast system - make energy efficiency one of them. A ballast with an efficiency of 85 percent or higher is considered a high-efficiency ballast; however, this is not always achievable for ballasts that have specific functions or features, particularly those for operating lamps of low wattage. Electronic HID ballasts are often 96 percent efficient and represent the most efficient type of ballast technology available.

Electronic ballasts for HID lamps up to 175 W are now available off the shelf from most lighting suppliers. Electronic ballasts are available for metal halide and high-pressure sodium lamps. Before purchasing an electronic HID ballast, ensure that the lamp manufacturer will warranty its lamps for operation with the electronic ballast to avoid electrical safety concerns and warranty issues.
