Technical Requirements for Energy-Using Products

Exit Signs

Legend = each word displayed on an exit sign, namely, "EXIT" and "SORTIE"
Type 1 – an internally lighted exit sign that is permanently connected to a single source of power (usually AC).
Type 2 – an internally lighted exit sign that is permanently connected to a normal source of power (usually AC) and a separate external source of power (usually DC) that is activated upon failure of the normal power supply which includes exit signs supplied as a component of a combination emergency lighting unit consisting of an internally lighted exit sign and a battery pack with attached emergency lamps.
Type 3 – an internally lighted exit sign that is permanently connected to a single external source of power (usually AC) and an internal DC power supply. The internal power supply may consist of an automatic load-control device, storage battery, and means for charging the battery.

Requirements for the Energy Efficiency Report, as Listed in Schedule IV of the Regulations

  • type of product (exit sign);
  • brand name;
  • model number;
  • manufacturer;
  • name of the organization or province that carried out the exit sign verification and authorized the verification mark that will be affixed to the exit sign;
  • type;
  • number of legends;
  • input voltage in volts;
  • frequency in Hz;
  • total current in amperes;
  • power consumption in W;
  • power factor for products with power consumption > 10 W (specify if lagging or leading);
  • total harmonic distortion for products with power consumption > 10 W.

APPLIES TO

a device used to identify the most direct path of egress for emergency purposes having a legend and optional directional indicator that is illuminated by a light source contained within the assembly, and includes

  • Type 1 and Type 3 exit signs as described in CSA C860, and
  • Type 2 exit signs as described in CSA C860, which includes exit signs supplied as a component of a combination emergency lighting unit consisting of an internally lighted exit sign and a battery pack with attached emergency lamps,

but does not include exit signs that

  • flash,
  • are photo-luminescent, or
  • are radio-luminescent.
