Development of Next Generation Energy Efficiency Housing Standards

Announcement of NRCan's Development of Next Generation Housing Standards.

EnerGuide Rating System (ERS)

With energy performance in new and existing housing continuing to improve, NRCan is embarking on a process to set, with stakeholders, the direction for the next generation of energy efficiency standards in Canada. The work will include a next generation EnerGuide Rating System (ERS) to accommodate advances in both existing and new housing technologies and programming (including net zero homes), and the growing needs of the many stakeholders and partners involved with ERS, including voluntary labelling by provinces.

The goal for ERS is to develop the most effective next generation energy rating system for new and existing houses that is supported by the best tools and is acceptable to and recognized by all stakeholders. To achieve this NRCan has launched a consultative process to renew the ERS and associated tools.

ENERGY STAR® for New Homes

NRCan launched the ENERGY STAR for New Homes (ESNH) initiative in 2005 to provide a simplified means for builders to build energy efficient homes and to provide new home buyers with a familiar symbol that represents a premium level of energy efficiency. The ESNH initiative aims to promote homes that are more energy efficient than homes built to local building code requirements.

With code built homes in some provinces catching up to the level of ESNH. NRCan is undertaking a process to develop the next generation of the ENERGY STAR for New Homes initiative.

R-2000 Standard

NRCan, in conjunction with the Canadian Home Builder's Association (CHBA), is announcing the start of a consultative process to renew the R-2000 Standard. R-2000 has been the best in class energy efficient label and the most comprehensive environmental standard in Canada for more than 20 years. However, the normal code practice in many provinces is catching up to the current R-2000 energy performance requirements. It is therefore necessary to redefine the overall performance requirements in order to once again position R-2000 houses at the leading edge of new home construction.
